Ceremonial Flagpole

On June 21, we will dedicate the University’s first ceremonial flagpole, located on the West Plaza of the Tate Student Center,  and while there are several flagpoles across campus, there has not been one designated as UGA’s signature flagpole until now.

And like most of the best ideas on this campus, this one did not originate in the Administration Building.  Wells Ellenberg, a junior from St. Simons majoring in history and political science, and a young man whose family has a deep tradition of military service, wrote to me and suggested that we install a flagpole in a location where students would see it every day and could gather for important occasions.

I am grateful to him for the idea and happy that we have made this important addition to this great campus.
