Expanding Informatics

The University of Georgia is strengthening its instruction and research in informatics, a rapidly growing field that harnesses massive data sets to solve some of the world’s most complex problems. Eight new faculty members recently joined UGA following the completion of the Presidential Informatics Hiring Initiative, bringing the total number of informatics faculty to more than 160 across campus. In addition, the University is launching the Georgia Informatics Institutes for Research and Education, which will house undergraduate and graduate programs and promote collaboration among faculty.

The University of Georgia is the largest public university in the nation to ensure that all undergraduate students engage in experiential learning prior to graduation. Archway Partnership

Archway Partnership

The Archway Partnership, a unit of the Office of Public Service and Outreach, was launched in 2005 to extend access to higher education resources across the state and address critical community-identified needs. Since its inception, the Archway Partnership has served a dozen Georgia communities through collaborations with UGA's 17 colleges and schools and other higher education institutions. Archway provides direct access for faculty and students to experience the opportunities and challenges facing communities in Georgia.

Experience UGA

The University of Georgia and the Clarke County School District have launched Experience UGA, a partnership that seeks to bring each of the 13,000 Clarke County students to UGA’s campus every year. Through a variety of field trips, students participate in hands-on, curricular-based learning activities.

Grady Students in Rio

Grady Students in Rio

Nine students from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication traveled to Rio de Janeiro to report on the 2016 Paralympic Games for the Associated Press. The students received full press credentials and produced multimedia content for global AP distribution. To support the students’ coverage, two Grady College professors, Vicki Michaelis and Mark Johnson, helped to supervise and edit the students' work. Two additional students from Grady traveled to Rio to report on the Olympic Games for the USOC's various information channels, including its website, TeamUSA.org.

First-Year Class

For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Georgia welcomed the most academically talented class in the institution’s history. The more than 5,400 first-year students entered the nation’s first state-chartered university with an average high school grade point average of 3.98 and an average SAT score of 1302. This year’s incoming class also is the most diverse on record.

Exploratory Center

The University of Georgia opened the Exploratory Center for Student Advising to provide strategic academic advising to all students with unspecified majors and those with intended-business or intended-journalism majors. Longer appointments and assignments that generate student reflection are some of the features that make advising in the Exploratory Center unique. The 14 specially trained advisors in the center serve more than 3,000 students, helping them create action plans that align their learning experiences with their career goals.

Class Size Initiative

Class Size Initiative

The University of Georgia has completed a major hiring initiative to reduce class sizes, create new course sections, and increase students’ interaction with faculty. UGA’s $4.4 million investment has resulted in more than 50 new hires and created more than 300 additional course sections, many with fewer than 20 students, across 81 majors. By reducing the number of large class sections and increasing personalized attention in critical instruction areas, the University is further improving student learning and success.

Enhancing Academic Advising

The University of Georgia recently opened the Exploratory Center for Student Advising to provide enhanced advising services to students who have yet to select a major or who intend to major in business or journalism. Housed in the heart of campus, the center’s specially trained advisors help students to develop academic plans that closely align with their career aspirations and make the most of their course credits, promoting timely graduation and cost savings.

This new initiative is part of a larger effort to provide the very best academic support for our students. Other related initiatives include increasing academic advising services for incoming students, hiring 35 additional advisors to provide more personalized attention, and introducing new web-based tools to help students and advisors track progress toward degree completion.

Our commitment to student learning and success remains unyielding, and enhancing academic advising is just one way we are transforming the educational environment for students at the University of Georgia.
