Proud of our student-athletes

With the conclusion of the spring sports season, I would like to congratulate our student-athletes for a job very well done. We are truly proud of their accomplishments.
The softball, baseball, golf, tennis, track and field, and cross-country teams all competed with the true Bulldog spirit. From the softball team, Alex Hugo and Chelsea Wilkinson were named All-Americans, and from the tennis team, Nathan Pasha and the doubles team of Ben Wagland and Hernus Pieters made it into the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament and also were named All-Americans. I was honored to introduce swim team member Shannon Vreeland as the Boyd McWhorter SEC Female Athlete of the Year at the recent SEC annual meeting.
What I’m most proud of is that our student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. UGA had 85 student-athletes make the winter sports SEC Academic Honor Roll this year. UGA’s student-athlete graduation rate has been increasing each year, and their collective GPA has risen to an all-time high. Only four football programs in the country—Stanford, Rice, Tulane and UGA—have had a 100 percent graduation rate. That puts UGA in good company.
I know it’s very hard to balance the demands of being a member of an athletic team with the rigors of performing well in the classroom. These young men and women are learning the leadership skills and the importance of time management and teamwork that will propel them into successful careers.
And along with the rest of the Bulldog Nation, I look forward to that first kickoff on Aug. 30 against Clemson between the hedges in beautiful Sanford Stadium with a stunning sea of red and black. It will be a sight to behold.
