On August 29, the University of Georgia dedicated The Jill and Marvin Willis Center for Writing. Supported by the incredible generosity of the Willis Family, the Center will offer writing support to students, faculty, and staff across the university in addition to providing a wide range of writing projects to foster a culture of academic and creative excellence across campus.
With locations in the Miller Learning Center, the McBay Science Library, and the Main Library, the expanded presence of the Willis Center for Writing will play a pivotal role in enhancing the writing skills of UGA students. This comes at a crucial time: routinely, employers cite writing as one of the most important competencies for their employees—but an area where the average college graduate is underprepared. The Willis Center now becomes a vital part in addressing these concerns. It is a special place that is student centered and staffed by individuals who are trained in teaching the writing skills our students need for the 21st century.
I am grateful for Jill and Marvin Willis, as well as countless other UGA alumni and friends of the University, for their continued commitment to supporting a culture of academic excellence. I look forward to seeing the ways in which the Willis Center for Writing will serve the campus community and equip our students with the necessary skills to position them well as they transition into the next chapter of their careers.
