The Strength of Our Community

As the academic year comes to a close, I am reminded of the deep ties that bind us as a UGA family. Together, we learn, we make new discoveries, and we serve our communities. During times of tragedy, we also come together to care for one another—just as we did recently, following the devastating automobile accident involving five of our students.

As a community, we also celebrate significant accomplishments together, such as the graduation of a new class. Tomorrow’s Commencement ceremonies represent meaningful goals achieved and new beginnings made possible by the hard work of our students and the support of faculty, staff, family, and friends. This summer, as our graduates move on to the next phase of their lives, they will take with them the spirit of UGA’s land-grant mission, and they will continue to serve as outstanding ambassadors of this great University. With the class of 2016, the number of living alumni will surpass 300,000 for the first time in our long history. This milestone is important because, as our alumni body grows, so too does the University’s ability to make a positive impact on society.

I am grateful to all members of the UGA community for their many contributions throughout the past year to advance this institution. As the University of Georgia continues its efforts to improve lives and strengthen communities, we can be confident that, together, we are making a difference in our state, nation, and world.
