Today marks the opening of the University of Georgia’s seventh annual Spotlight on the Arts festival—a celebration of visual, literary, and performing arts on our campus. Between now and November 11, members of the University community and the public are invited to experience more than 100 events and exhibitions featuring the talents of UGA faculty and students as well as performers and scholars from around the world.
Today also is the first day of the national conference of the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru), which will bring more than 300 faculty and students from over 40 research-intensive universities to UGA. The arts and design are vital to a well-rounded research university, and the University of Georgia is proud to help advance research, teaching, scholarship, and creative practice in these fields.
From concerts and art exhibitions to book talks, film screenings, and theater performances, the next eleven days will offer something for everyone to enjoy. I appreciate the UGA Arts Council, which sponsors the Spotlight on the Arts festival, and their dedication to fostering an awareness and appreciation of the arts and an environment conducive to artistic innovation on our campus.
