As the birthplace of public higher education in America, the University of Georgia is inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs, researchers, and informed citizens who will change the world. For over 235 years, UGA has been engaged in a mission of leadership and service to our state.

A land-grant and sea-grant university, the University of Georgia is the state’s oldest and most comprehensive institution of higher education. Its motto, “to teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things,” reflects the University’s integral role in the state and nation’s intellectual, cultural, and environmental heritage.

Through 11 hiring initiatives over the past 10 years, we have recruited more than 150 scholars and nine new Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholars in strategically important fields.

The University of Georgia is making extraordinary leaps in research and development expenditures thanks to strategic faculty hires and facility investments. We have increased R&D expenses by nearly 56% over the past nine years, surpassing a half-billion dollars in R&D spending in FY22 for the first time in UGA’s history.

UGA had back-to-back Rhodes Scholars in 2023 and 2024 for the fourth time in our institution’s history. The University of Georgia was the only school in the SEC and one of only five public universities in the United States, in addition to the nation’s service academies, to have a Rhodes recipient in 2024.

Four times in the past decade, UGA has been recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a Top Producer of student Fulbright scholars. In 2023, UGA also was the nation’s only public university to have multiple Marshall Scholars.

Our world-class faculty are also making waves on an international scale. From winning a MacArthur “Genius Grant” to securing dozens of multi-million-dollar awards to advance their research, UGA faculty are making major inroads in their chosen fields.

At the University of Georgia, high-impact, real-world opportunities are fundamental to undergraduate learning. That’s why we have offered approximately $9.3 million in student scholarships since the Experiential Learning initiative launched in 2016. In 2023, President Morehead committed an additional $1 million toward experiential learning scholarships.
