As the birthplace of public higher education in America, the University of Georgia is inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs, researchers, and informed citizens who will change the world. For over 240 years, UGA has been engaged in a mission of leadership and service to our state.

A land-grant and sea-grant university, the University of Georgia is the state’s oldest and most comprehensive institution of higher education. Its motto, “to teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things,” reflects the University’s integral role in the state and nation’s intellectual, cultural, and environmental heritage.

UGA had back-to-back Rhodes Scholars in 2023 and 2024 for the fourth time in our institution’s history. The University of Georgia was the only school in the SEC and one of only five public universities in the United States, in addition to the nation’s service academies, to have a Rhodes recipient in 2024.

Four times in the past decade, UGA has been recognized by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a Top Producer of student Fulbright scholars. In 2023, UGA also was the nation’s only public university to have multiple Marshall Scholars.

Our world-class faculty are also making waves on an international scale. From winning a MacArthur “Genius Grant” to securing dozens of multi-million-dollar awards to advance their research, UGA faculty are making major inroads in their chosen fields.

At the University of Georgia, high-impact, real-world opportunities are fundamental to undergraduate learning. That’s why we have offered approximately $9.3 million in student scholarships since the Experiential Learning initiative launched in 2016. In 2023, President Morehead committed an additional $1 million toward experiential learning scholarships.

Strategic Plan

The University of Georgia aspires to expand its positive impact on lives and communities across the state of Georgia, throughout the nation, and around the world. To continue moving the University toward this aspiration, President Morehead has charged a Strategic Planning Committee comprised of senior administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni to develop a five-year strategic plan ranging from 2026 to 2031. To fulfill its charge, the committee will develop three to five goals in response to three mission-centered Strategic Imperatives:

  1. Advance and strengthen instructional excellence and student success
  2. Accelerate and expand research and innovation that improves society
  3. Deepen UGA’s commitment to serving communities across Georgia and beyond
