Since its inception, the University of Georgia has blazed new trails in higher education. Among our many achievements is the establishment of the School of Environmental Design, which in 1969 became the first and largest of its kind in the Southeast. Today, the College of Environment and Design (CED) is a national and international leader in multiple fields and specializations related to landscape architecture, historic preservation, and planning.
CED helps the University fulfill our land-grant mission every day as it tackles major social, economic, and environmental challenges, from helping coastal communities fight shoreline erosion to revitalizing downtown business districts. The College also has been a leader in experiential learning, engaging students at all levels in community-based projects. Through UGA’s Archway Partnership, for example, CED students have helped communities across Georgia complete hundreds of projects ranging from streetscape and trail designs to building renovations and master plans.
I congratulate the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the College of Environment and Design on 50 years of outstanding scholarship, education, and service, and I look forward to all they will accomplish in the years ahead.
