At the University of Georgia, we are committed to creative, interdisciplinary approaches to the complex problems facing our world. As part of this commitment, we recently dedicated a new facility—the second building in the Interdisciplinary STEM Research Complex—that will promote intellectual collisions and strengthen collaborations among chemistry and engineering researchers and their colleagues in the life sciences, biomedicine, agriculture, computer science, and other disciplines.
The new building features three levels of flexible, open lab space; an 88-seat classroom; and office and support space for faculty and graduate students in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Chemistry and the College of Engineering. Paired with Building 1, which opened last fall, the finished I-STEM Research Complex adds more than 200,000 square feet of state-of-the-art instructional and research space. The completion of the I-STEM Research Complex brings the University another step closer to fulfilling a multi-year capital plan to build, renovate, and modernize hundreds of thousands of square feet devoted to research and innovation on our campus.
We are grateful for the strong support of the Governor, the Georgia General Assembly, and the Chancellor and Board of Regents, which made this project possible. We are excited about the innovative products and solutions that will come from discoveries made in the I-STEM Research Complex as well as the exponential impact the facility will have through educating the next generation of researchers in the STEM disciplines.
